Class Teacher: Miss Lodge
Terms Five and Six
This term, the children will be exploring the big question: “What’s your favourite story?”
To help us investigate this, we will work through a series of mini-enquiries:
Through stories, class discussions, and shared experiences, children will explore the concepts of comparison, purpose, identification, pattern, fairness, cause and effect, strength, phenomena, evolution, inheritance and impact.
Phonics
We follow the Read Write Inc. phonics programme. This term, the reception children will continue learning their set 1 sounds and special friends. They will become more confident with blending sounds together to read words. They will continue to practise writing letters and words.
Year 1 children will be learning set 2 and 3 sounds and building their skills of reading and writing words containing these sounds. We encourage children to apply their phonics skills across all areas of learning.
Families can support at home by engaging with the Virtual Classroom films wherever possible. Please continue using the QR codes to access virtual classroom videos.
English
We will be doing daily reading and writing lessons based upon a new story every few weeks. These are: Burglar Bill, Zog, Rhinoceros Rules, A gift for Amma and Small’s Big Dream.
These lessons will explore new vocabulary, grammar, comprehension skills and provide opportunities for children to learn how to form letters correctly and how to write a sentence. We will explore lots of other stories within our daily story time sessions.
Maths
Across the term, the children will develop themselves as mathematicians. Reception children will be taught the following units: numbers beyond 10 and counting patterns, spatial reasoning. Year 1’s will be taught: Numbers 0–20, geometry, position and direction, time and coin recognition. The children will explore counting songs every day.
