Rowan Class

Class Teachers – Mrs Collins and Mrs Brown

Term Two

Our enquiry is: Why is South America Important?

This term, the children will be exploring the big question: “Why is South America Important?” To help us investigate this, we will work through a series of mini enquiries:

  • Where is South America?

  • Are all countries in South America the same?

  • How does physical geography influence a nation’s fate?

  • Where do people settle and why?

  • Who first created human features?

  • What does a city look like today?

Through videos, research, class discussions, and shared experiences, children will have the opportunity to reflect on these questions and develop their own.

English

We will be doing daily reading and writing lessons based upon The Promise. These lessons will explore literary techniques, grammar, comprehension skills and provide opportunities to create fiction and non-fiction pieces of work. The class will be reading The Explorer as our class text.

Maths

Across the term, the children will develop themselves as mathematicians. In Year 6, we will focus on the four operations, order of operations and shape.  In Year 5 we will be continuing our work on number (including negative numbers) plus focusing on measurements. We also will continue to have twice weekly arithmetic practice to develop our fluency and speed.

R.E

In R.E we will be answering the question ‘Why does religion look different around the world?’ discussions will be had around how different people worship and demonstrate their faith. This term we will also learn about the nativity story and why God is important to Christians.

PSHE

This term’s unit is Families and Friends
We will be focusing on respect, manners, behaviour, healthy friendships, stereotypes, how families look around the world and changes/loss.

PE

Our P.E.days are Monday and Wednesday.
This term we are focusing on football as a competitive game and in Real PE  the ‘social’ cog

Home learning

For home learning, children should be doing the following every week:

  • Reading as often as possible – ideally 5 times a week
  • Practising Times-Tables on TT rockstars

  • Spelling Shed – games to play linked to this week’s spelling rule

Children have logins for the websites above in their reading records. Please let Mrs Brown or Mrs Collins know if your child needs another copy of their log-in details.

Year 6 - Your child has been given a SATS Reading Workbook. At the front of this book you will find a grid with the tasks, date due and date handed out. We thank you in advance for your support.
