Term One and Two

Our enquiry is: Why do people invade and settle?

This term, the children will be exploring the big question: “Why do people invade and settle?” To help us investigate this, we will work through a series of mini-enquiries. Who were the Romans? How did Britain resist?  Where can we see the impact? Who were the Vikings? Where did the Vikings settle? How did the Vikings get to Britain? Why did the Vikings invade? How did Britain resist? What impact did they have? Through stories, class discussions, and shared experiences, children will have the opportunity to reflect on their own uniqueness and develop an understanding of belonging.

English 

We will be learning grammatical features through our daily writing lessons based upon ‘Saving the Butterflies’ by Helen Cooper. These lessons will explore literary techniques, grammar, comprehension skills and provide opportunities to create fiction and non-fiction pieces of work. The class will also be reading ‘1000 year old boy’  by  Ross Welford as our reading comprehension text. 

Maths

We will be splitting into two groups for Maths so that Year 5 children will be taught separately to those in Year 6. We will all be focusing on number and place value initially. 

R.E

During terms one and two will be focusing on the questions ‘Are all religions equal?’ and ‘What makes some texts sacred?

PSHE

We will look at families and relationships.

PE

We will be swimming on a Monday afternoon (children to bring their costume and towel in a separate bag)
PE will be on Wednesday and children will be required to come to school in their PE kit

 

Home learning

For home learning, children should be doing the following every week: 

• Reading as often as possible – ideally 5 times a week

• Practising times tables on TT rockstars 

• Spelling shed – We assign tasks linked to this week’s words for children to practice.

Year 6’s will also have homework which will be sent home on a Friday and expected to be completed and returned by the following Wednesday.
