Hazel Class

Class Teachers – Mrs Strange and Mrs Skinner

Terms Five and Six

Our enquiry is: Why are humans unique?

This term, the children will be exploring the big question: “Why are humans unique?” To help us investigate this, we will work through a series of mini-enquiries:

  • How is sound made?
  • How far can you hear?
  • Why do we need a digestive system?
  • Are all teeth the same?
  • How do we care for our teeth?
  • How do living things get energy to survive?
  • What happens when we get older?

Through videos, research, class discussions, and shared experiences, children will have the opportunity to reflect on these questions and develop an understanding of belonging.

English

We will be doing daily writing lessons based upon The Man Who Walked Between the Towers. These lessons will explore literary techniques, grammar, comprehension skills and provide opportunities to create fiction and non-fiction pieces of work. The class will be reading October, October as our class text.

Maths

Both Year 4 and Year 5 will be focusing on developing their understanding of fractions this term, building key skills in recognising, comparing and working with different types of fractions.

Year 4 will also continue to strengthen their knowledge of core multiplication facts in preparation for the Multiplication Tables Check in June.

R.E

In R.E we will be discussing what is meant by suffering and why some people experience suffering in their lifetime.

PSHE

During term five, we will be focusing on human rights, diversity and money. In term six, we will be looking at reproduction in humans. A separate letter will follow about the content of this unit.

PE

Our PE days are Monday and Wednesday.
This term, we will be developing gross motor skills, with a particular focus on spatial awareness and jumping.

Home learning

For home learning, children should be doing the following every week:

  • Reading as often as possible – ideally 5 times a week
  • Times Tables – practising times tables on TT Rockstars
  • Spelling shed – games linked to this week's spelling rule

Children have logins for the websites above in their reading records. Please let Mrs Strange or Mrs Skinner know if the children need another copy of their log-in details.

Year 4 – Each week we will be learning two new core multiplication facts in preparation for the Multiplications Tables Check in June. These will be sent home each week. Please support your child in learning these facts.
