Class Teacher – Miss Lodge

Term Two

Our enquiry is: What is around me?

This term, the children will be exploring the big question: “What is around me?”
To help us investigate this, we will work through a series of mini-enquiries:
● Where am I?
● What can I see out of my window?
● What are the colours of the seasons?
● What sort of houses and homes are there?
● Who are the people that help me?
● What is a city?
● What is a map?

Through stories, class discussions, and shared experiences, children will develop an understanding of belonging and have the opportunity to explore the environment and reflect on the influence people have.

Phonics

We follow the Read Write Inc. phonics programme. This term, the reception children will continue learning their set 1 sounds and special friends. They will become more confident with blending sounds together to read words. They will continue to practise writing letters and words.

Year 1 children will be learning sets 2 and 3 sounds and building their skills of reading and writing words containing these sounds. We encourage children to apply their phonics skills across all areas of learning.
Families can support at home by engaging with the Virtual Classroom films wherever possible.

English

We will be doing daily reading and writing lessons based upon a new story each week. These are: Winnie the witch, Anna Hibiscus’ song, Lila and the secret of rain, Lost and found, one snowy night and Stickman. These lessons will explore new vocabulary, grammar, comprehension skills and provide opportunities for children to learn how to form letters correctly and how to write a sentence. We will explore lots of other stories within our daily storytime sessions.

Maths

Across the term, the children will develop themselves as mathematicians. Reception children will work on meet the Numberblocks, develop number recognition, including subitising and have a deep understanding of numbers to 10, including the composition of each number. Year 1 children will work on numbers 0–5, then extend to numbers 0 –10. They will explore part whole relationships and learn about shapes. The children will
explore counting songs every day. The children will also have a daily 10-minute ‘Mastering Number’ maths session. They will be given lots of opportunities to explore mathematical concepts through the provision.
